Description

The Great Column’s bottom block shows two winged children beneath an immense rounded column, their small bodies seeming to bear its weight. Their faces, wings and curling details create a lively base below the broad architectural surface. The Great Column’s bottom section turns structural support into an imaginative encounter between monumental scale and playful, closely observed figures.

Dated 1517, this woodcut concentrates on the lower part of a larger ornamental design. Fine marks describe the rounded shaft differently from the children’s softer bodies and decorative foliage, making the contrast of materials especially engaging. Their intertwined stance supplies both stability and movement, giving a practical architectural motif an unexpected warmth. The image’s charm comes from this meeting of firmness and animation, where the smallest figures bring personality to the weight of the structure above them.
