Description
A Maja Standing with Hands on Her Hips presents a solitary woman whose pose gives her an immediate sense of resolve. The isolated presentation brings attention to her body’s stance as much as to her face, making self-possession the image’s central event. A familiar gesture carries much of the subject’s expressive character.
Goya’s etching and drypoint make the standing woman a concentrated study of human presence. The two processes give the printed line different qualities, allowing a compact figure to retain both definition and a more searching texture. Rather than expanding the subject into a long narrative, the image holds a familiar attitude before the viewer, inviting attention to the confidence and independence that can be conveyed by a person simply standing.
