Description
Ambrose sits at a desk within a carefully ordered room, his attention directed toward the book before him. The surrounding shelves, furnishings and patterned floor give the scholar a convincing inhabited setting. Saint Ambrose makes an act of reading the heart of the image, allowing the room’s many details to reinforce rather than distract from his absorbed presence.
The woodcut is dated around 1492 and is possibly by Albrecht Dürer. Firm architectural lines establish the interior, while the folds of the saint’s clothing give the seated body a softer rhythm. Text beneath the image adds another register of reading to the page. Its intimacy comes from the correspondence between the viewer’s attention and the saint’s own, inviting a quiet encounter with a person wholly occupied by study within an orderly, tangible space.
