Description
In The Jockey, a horse and rider gallop toward the right in the foreground of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s lithograph, with other horses and a grandstand suggested behind. The larger mounted pair gives the scene an immediate direction of movement. Sketch-like marks keep the surrounding racing world present without diminishing the concentrated relationship between rider and animal at the front.
Made in 1899, the lithograph is printed on China paper. Its subject brings a role defined by action into a medium that allows the image to be considered more slowly. Toulouse-Lautrec gives the jockey an identity inseparable from the animal world around him, making the printed work a point of contact between person and occupation. The encounter’s interest rests in that relationship, where a familiar figure of racing can retain a presence beyond the passing event.
