Description
Christ on the Mount of Olives appears in this engraving after Albrecht Dürer from the Little Passion. Christ kneels in prayer while his companions sleep across the foreground. Above him an angel appears with a chalice, and an approaching group is visible beyond the rocks. The differing levels of the composition set spiritual vigilance against bodily exhaustion, allowing the impending danger to emerge quietly at the edge of the scene.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. The praying hands and bowed head provide a concentrated center amid the uneven landscape. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
