Description
The Betrayal of Christ appears in this engraving after Albrecht Dürer from the Little Passion. Judas embraces Christ amid a tightly packed group of armed men. Raised weapons, a burning torch and overlapping faces crowd the space around the meeting. In the foreground a disciple stands over a fallen man, creating a second surge of action beneath the central kiss and turning the arrest into a scene of close physical struggle.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. The convergence of hands and weapons surrounds Christ with movement while his face remains composed. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
