Description
Christ before Caiaphas appears in this engraving after Albrecht Dürer from the Little Passion. Christ stands among armed guards before an enthroned religious authority. One captor gestures insistently toward the seated figure, whose hand draws attention to the exchange. The high seat and heavy canopy establish an unequal confrontation, while the prisoner remains close to the men controlling his movements in the narrow chamber.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. An alert dog in the foreground adds an ordinary, unexpectedly vivid detail to the tense hearing. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
