Description
A blindfolded Christ sits surrounded by figures who crowd around him, gesture and prepare to strike. Their animated poses contrast with his bowed head and seated stillness. Arches and columns enclose the scene, concentrating attention on the prisoner and his tormentors.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. The contrast between the tormentors’ gestures and Christ’s seated stillness gives the scene its emotional force. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
