Description
Christ Carrying the Cross shows Jesus fallen to one knee beneath the heavy timber, turning toward a kneeling woman who holds out a cloth. Soldiers and onlookers crowd the procession, with raised weapons and buildings behind them. The diagonal cross and tightly packed figures convey the strain of the journey.
The image translates Dürer’s narrative design into the finely worked lines of engraving. Closely spaced marks distinguish fabric, bodies and the surrounding setting, keeping the story vivid at a small scale. This later interpretation preserves the direct emotional appeal of the composition while remaining a work after Dürer.
