Description
The Lamentation gathers mourners closely around Christ’s body, their bent heads and supporting hands concentrating the scene’s sorrow into a small space. Fabric folds and overlapping figures create a dense shelter around the lifeless form. The Lamentation moves the story of the Passion away from public violence toward the intimate work of grieving and caring for the dead.
Within The Small Passion, the woodcut’s compact scale brings the emotional relationships into sharp focus. Faces turn toward Christ and toward one another, while the weight of his body contrasts with the upright figures around him. Strong dark passages hold the group together, and pale areas lead the eye from face to hand to cloth. The image finds its gravity in shared attention, making compassion as central as loss.
