Description
The Man of Sorrows shows Christ with his crowned head turned and his body gathered into a posture of weary stillness. The exposed figure occupies much of the small image, leaving the viewer close to the face, hands and bent limbs. The Man of Sorrows presents suffering through solitude and physical presence, making an inward moment carry the emotional weight of the larger Passion narrative.
Created in 1515, this work was etched on iron, a medium whose lively lines give the shaded passages a distinctive texture. The close composition allows small changes in posture to become especially expressive. Dark strokes of hair, thorns and shadow contrast with the lighter body, while the surrounding space remains restrained. Its gravity lies in that concentration, inviting contemplation of pain through a particular human form rather than an expansive scene of action.
