Description
Virgin and Child with the Monkey places Mary and the infant beside a broad stretch of water. The child holds a small bird, while a monkey sits near Mary’s feet, attached by a chain to a wooden post. A half-timbered house rises on the far bank, giving the devotional group an unusually specific and inviting landscape setting.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving combines the tenderness of the mother and child with lively observations of animals, plants and buildings. The folds of Mary’s robe form a substantial shape in the foreground, while clouds and distant banks open the view behind her. The small bird and watchful monkey reward a closer look, adding a playful natural presence to the image’s quiet sacred focus.
