Description
Hercules at the Crossroad by Albrecht Dürer draws a classical subject into a dense, restless landscape. Powerful figures gather beneath a spreading tree, their raised arms and turning bodies creating a dramatic exchange. A seated woman and child occupy one side of the foreground, while a wooded hillside and distant buildings open the scene beyond the immediate encounter.
Made around 1498, the engraving rewards attention to the contrast between muscular bodies and the intricate textures of bark, leaves and rough ground. Its close gathering of figures gives the scene a theatrical intensity without separating it from the natural setting. The branching tree seems to echo the gestures below, binding human movement and landscape into a single, animated composition.
