Description

The Standard Bearer by Albrecht Dürer gives a young soldier a commanding stance in an open landscape. He holds a tall flagstaff at an angle while resting his other hand near his hip, his fitted clothing and broad sleeves creating a vivid silhouette. The flag’s loose movement contrasts with the firm placement of his legs.

Engraved around 1501, the image is especially engaging for the confidence conveyed through a single figure. Dürer sets the soldier against a lighter distance, giving the body room to stand out while small landscape details keep the setting alive. The contrast between poised bearer and animated cloth turns the portrait into a lively study of costume, balance and public presence.
