Description
Nemesis shows a winged female figure balancing on a globe above an expansive landscape, holding a covered cup and a bridle. Fabric streams from her body into the surrounding air, while a river, bridges and clustered buildings spread through the valley below. The enormous difference in scale makes the figure seem suspended over an entire inhabited world.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving Nemesis, also known as The Great Fortune, combines allegorical presence with exceptionally close landscape detail. The cup and bridle give the upright figure distinct objects to carry, while the globe makes her footing appear precarious. Fine lines connect the texture of wings and cloth to the minute structures below. The image rewards both immediate appreciation of its dramatic silhouette and patient exploration of the countryside beneath it.
