Description
In this engraving by Albrecht Dürer, Saint George sits on a powerful horse above the defeated dragon, his banner and armor giving the rider a commanding outline. The animal’s raised stance and muscular body add movement to a scene that otherwise conveys a completed victory. Saint George on Horseback makes the relationship between rider, mount and vanquished creature immediately clear within a compact landscape.
The engraving gains much of its strength from contrasting textures. Hard-edged armor meets the horse’s softer coat and the rough, twisting form below, while fine lines distinguish earth and distant scenery. The banner introduces a broad, flowing shape above the tightly described bodies. Together these elements give the familiar saintly subject both physical credibility and a strong ceremonial presence, turning the aftermath of conflict into an image of protection and resolve.
