Description
Christ Carrying the Cross by Albrecht Dürer compresses a crowded procession around the burdened figure of Christ. Soldiers and onlookers press in from either side, while the cross cuts through the space above his shoulders. The figures at the front turn toward him, creating an intimate point of attention within the larger movement of the crowd.
Engraved in 1512 for The Passion, the scene gains intensity from its tightly enclosed arrangement. Dark hatching distinguishes bodies and equipment, while lighter faces and garments bring selected figures forward. The cross’s strong diagonal gives direction to the many competing gestures, making the physical burden and human responses around it the central drama of this compact, richly worked image.
