Description
The Crucifixion by Albrecht Dürer gathers mourners beneath the outstretched arms of Christ. The tall cross organizes the scene, while figures at its base turn inward through lowered heads, clasped hands and broad folds of clothing. Dark bands of sky intensify the pale body above them, giving the composition a solemn and immediate focus.
Engraved in 1511 for The Passion, the work balances the cross’s strong geometry with the more varied shapes of the human gathering. Fine lines distinguish the body, robes and surrounding ground, drawing the viewer close to the episode’s physical detail. Dürer lets grief unfold through posture rather than spectacle, creating a devotional image whose clarity of form reinforces its emotional weight.
