Description

Pilate Washing His Hands by Albrecht Dürer brings a small, deliberate gesture into a scene charged with judgment. Pilate sits at the left beneath a dark architectural shelter, while an attendant kneels before him with the vessel used for washing. At the right, figures gather toward an opening that reveals a distant crowd and buildings beyond.

Engraved in 1512 for The Passion, the image balances the governor’s elevated position against the lowered posture of the servant. Dense shadow around the seated figure contrasts with the lighter space outside, directing attention between private gesture and public consequence. The careful arrangement gives the handwashing a troubling clarity: an apparently ordinary act becomes the quiet center of a decisive moment.
