Description
The Lamentation gathers mourners around Christ’s body at the foot of the cross. One figure supports his upper body while others bend toward him, and a woman raises her clasped hands above the group. The ladder behind them still marks the descent from the cross, giving this moment of mourning a tangible connection to the action that has just ended.
Albrecht Dürer’s 1507 engraving from The Passion concentrates emotion through a compact arrangement of bodies and hands. The exposed figure of Christ lies against deeply folded robes, and the gathering presses close without losing its individual expressions. Rather than opening the scene into a broad spectacle, the image brings loss to an intimate scale, where grief is visible as touch, support and prayer.
