Description
Saint Simon by Albrecht Dürer gives the apostle a sturdy and contemplative presence. The bearded figure stands almost alone, holding a book close to his body while a long saw rises beside him. Broad folds of his robe create a strong silhouette, with the largely open background allowing the hands, head and identifying attribute to remain clear.
Engraved in 1523, the image brings its interest to the contrast between the saint’s thoughtful expression and the angular object he carries. Dürer models the fabric with an intricate range of lines, yet the figure never loses its simple outline. The restrained setting turns the portrait into an encounter with a single individual, combining recognizable sacred identity with a convincing human weight.
