Description
A structure collapses around falling people in Ravages of War, joining broken architecture to vulnerable bodies. The scene presents destruction through those caught inside it, giving no victorious side or heroic explanation. Goya directs attention instead to a world in which the ordinary structures of safety have failed and human lives fall with them.
Goya’s etched design from the Disasters of War combines several methods of working and altering the plate. The resulting surface allows hard forms and changing tones to occupy the same compact image. Its power lies in the refusal to make devastation orderly or reassuring: the work keeps attention on people placed under forces they cannot control, giving the word ravages an immediate human weight.
