Description
Entombment shows mourners gathering around Christ’s body beside an open stone tomb in a wooded setting. Several figures support or attend the body, while a seated woman grieves nearby and others stand behind. The surrounding trees and shadowed rock create a secluded place for the burial, with a small opening toward buildings in the distance.
This engraving after Albrecht Dürer gives the Entombment a rich setting of closely worked foliage, drapery and stone. The bodies form a connected group around the coffin, allowing careful gestures to carry the story through the dense detail. The contrast between standing attendants and the supported figure gives the scene its emotional structure. Its power rests in the shared work of mourning, making the sacred episode tangible through human care and physical closeness.
