Description
Betrayal of Christ gathers the arrest into a close struggle of bodies, weapons and faces. Judas leans toward Christ while armed men press around them, and a disciple raises his sword above a fallen figure in the foreground. A torch rises behind the group, adding a sense of night and urgency to the tightly enclosed action.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving from The Passion distinguishes the episode’s opposing gestures without dispersing its energy. The central embrace becomes a sign of betrayal, while the sword and fallen body turn resistance into another burst of violence. Deep shadows join the overlapping figures, making the scene feel immediate and tense, with Christ’s composed presence holding its emotional center amid the surrounding force.
