Description
Flagellation of Christ shows Christ bound to a column while tormentors raise their arms around him in a confined interior. One man twists forward close to the viewer, another lifts a weapon behind, and Christ turns amid the converging gestures. The central pillar divides the space without separating the bodies pressed around it.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving from the Passion series gives the Flagellation a forceful rhythm of bending limbs and opposing directions. Fine marks model exposed bodies, rough hair and the folds of clothing, while the shadowed architecture increases the sense of confinement. Christ’s vulnerable position remains clearly visible within the movement. The image’s concentrated scale makes the encounter immediate, allowing a few tightly arranged figures to convey the episode’s cruelty and emotional weight.
