Albrecht Dürer’s 1508 engraving from The Passion gives the episode a striking emotional range. The upward reach of Christ’s hands contrasts with the bowed heads and reclining forms of the disciples. Closely worked shadows hold the rocky setting together, while the bright face and robes keep the prayer visible at its center. Solitude emerges here even in the presence of companions.
