Description
The Betrayal shows Judas approaching Christ in a crowded nighttime gathering as armed men close around them. In the foreground, Saint Peter raises a sword over a fallen figure, while weapons and a torch rise above the overlapping heads. The close arrangement turns the arrest into a compressed meeting of betrayal, fear and sudden violence.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving from the Passion series links several actions through the direction of bodies and gestures. The encounter between Judas and Christ remains near the center, while Peter’s raised arm creates a forceful diagonal below. Fine lines give texture to armor, hair and folded cloth, distinguishing figures within the dense crowd. The small image sustains an unusually vivid narrative, asking the viewer to follow both the central betrayal and the reactions unfolding around it.
