Description
Jan Uytenbogaert presents the Remonstrant preacher in a portrait that combines personal presence with the signs of his calling. Rembrandt shows him seated beside an open Bible, wearing a skullcap and a prominent ruff. The book anchors the image in the sitter’s religious life, while the face turns the viewer’s attention toward the individual behind that role. The portrait’s oval organization brings these elements into a contained, deliberate arrangement.
The relationship between face, clothing and book gives the work its measured character. The ruff frames the head, while the open pages introduce a quieter counterpoint to the sitter’s direct presence. Rembrandt’s etched line makes the portrait readable as both an account of appearance and a study of public identity. The work combines etching and drypoint.
