Description
Cupid Resting (copy) presents the mythological figure in a moment of repose. The Metropolitan Museum of Art catalogs the undated work as an etching and drypoint after Rembrandt, rather than as an original by Rembrandt himself. The title’s copy designation is part of that distinction and connects the image to an earlier composition.
The resting subject offers a quieter view of Cupid than the familiar image of the god in flight or aiming an arrow. The emphasis falls on repose and the presence of the figure, giving the mythological theme an intimate scale. Linear detail and tonal contrast shape the study. The work also reflects the way an artist’s compositions could circulate through copies, extending the life of an image beyond its original maker.
