Description
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec sends Caudieux diagonally across his poster in a dark tailcoat and light waistcoat. The performer’s stepping body gives the design immediate movement, while his face turns in profile beneath the lettering above. The light garment breaks the darker costume into distinct areas, making an energetic stage personality readable through posture as much as likeness.
Dated 1893, the original lithograph was printed in four colors on machine-wove paper. Its format invites a direct encounter, different from the slower sequence of a private album. Toulouse-Lautrec gives a named subject the lasting presence of a graphic design, joining the needs of announcement with the possibilities of an individual likeness. The poster preserves an entertainment identity in a form that remains visually interesting after the event it once promoted has passed.
