Description
Seated Giant shows a giant with his broad back turned toward the viewer, looking over his shoulder as a crescent moon appears above. The enormous body makes the surrounding world seem distant and reduced, yet the seated posture brings an unexpected stillness to the subject. Goya turns vast scale into an intimate encounter with a figure whose thoughts remain inaccessible.
Burnished aquatint gives Seated Giant a richly tonal character, using darkness and areas of light to model the body rather than relying chiefly on sharp outline. The image’s force comes from the meeting of immense presence and withdrawn attention. Instead of presenting a giant through action or conquest, Goya makes sitting and looking sufficient, allowing quietness to deepen the mystery of a being larger than the world around him.
