Description
Study of a Group of Trees follows a twisting trunk upward into a lively crown of leaves. Quick loops and clustered strokes suggest foliage without describing every leaf, while firmer lines give the branching structure its strength. Open paper between the branches lets light and air move through the drawing.
Made in pen and brown ink around 1625–50, the drawing is attributed to the circle of Nicolas Poussin. Its appeal lies in the balance of close observation and energetic shorthand: the tree feels rooted and substantial, yet its canopy remains full of movement.
