Description
A young man bends in appeal before older figures in Humility versus Pride. The contrast of postures makes the difference in their positions visible, giving the encounter an unequal balance before any words are imagined. Goya places the act of asking beside the power to respond, allowing the title’s opposed qualities to emerge through a recognizably human relationship.
This Madrid Album drawing uses brush and carbon-black washes to build the figures with fluid tonal marks. The image’s force comes from the space between petition and answer, where the person who implores must wait on another’s willingness. It remains engaging because the moral terms in the title are not distant abstractions; they belong to the bodies and gestures of people facing one another.
