Description

Masquerading asses are whipped in a scene that brings costume, animal identity and punishment into unsettling proximity. Goya’s title makes the figures’ disguise part of the subject, suggesting an encounter in which appearances and roles have become unstable. The action introduces cruelty into the masquerade, preventing the strange gathering from remaining simply comic.

The brush drawing belongs to the Madrid Album and combines carbon-black washes with additional pen marks. Its satirical interest comes from the meeting of human behavior and animal forms, allowing disguise to expose rather than conceal folly. The image invites a closer look at a world where pretending to be something else does not offer protection, and where amusement can quickly become an occasion for force.
