Description
A man drinks while a woman tries to stop him in You’ll See Later. Their opposed actions turn a familiar domestic encounter into a contest between immediate desire and anticipated consequence. Goya gives the title the tone of a warning, making the moment before the viewer feel connected to something still to come.
The drawing from the Black Border Album uses brush, black and gray ink and wash, with altered passages that keep its surface lively. Its meaning rests in a recognizably human difficulty: advice can be present without becoming restraint. The work remains engaging through that unresolved exchange, allowing the viewer to consider how concern and insistence meet when one person tries to interrupt another’s chosen pleasure.
