Description
Versailles by Auguste Renoir turns a formal palace setting into a softly colored autumn landscape. Chestnut trees line the avenue, their seasonal foliage surrounding the sculpture and ordered spaces of the courtyard on the château’s north side.
Dated 1900–1905, the painting balances the permanence of architecture and sculpture with the changing life of the trees. Renoir’s detached touches of color soften the grand setting and give the view an intimate, reflective character.
