Description
The Last Supper, after Leonardo da Vinci, shows Rembrandt responding to an earlier master with his own dramatic imagination. In this red-chalk drawing, the apostles’ gestures and reactions gather around Christ, compressing the familiar scene into a closely knit group.
Made in 1634–35, the drawing draws on an early print after Leonardo’s mural in Milan. Rembrandt reshapes the figures and their shared space, making the work an interpretation rather than a literal transcription of the famous composition.
