Description
Self-Portrait by Rembrandt presents the artist in a broad, soft cap and loosely fastened coat, his face turned toward the viewer with an intent, unsmiling expression. Dark washes gather around his head and shoulders, while quick pen strokes pick out the clothing and the creases of the face.
Made between 1635 and 1640, the drawing balances bold shadow with passages of exposed paper. Its searching gaze and freely handled lines give the portrait an immediate, personal presence.
