Description
Arch of Honor narrative panels bring six episodes from Maximilian I’s dynastic history into a densely worked sequence of figures, buildings and inscriptions. Marriage, succession and military conflict unfold across separate scenes, giving the sheet the rhythm of an illustrated chronicle.
This proof belongs to the monumental Arch of Honor, dated 1515 and printed in 1517–18. The collaborative project involved Albrecht Dürer, Hans Springinklee and Wolf Traut, with blocks cut by Hieronymus Andreae. Fine woodcut detail and the arrangement of text and images invite close study of each episode as well as the larger imperial narrative.
