Description
The Arch in the Entryway of the Right Portal layers soldiers, portraits and fantastic ornament into an elaborate architectural design. Columns and an arched opening provide a firm structure, while dense woodcut linework fills the surfaces with movement and symbolic detail.
Part of the Arch of Honor, this proof was dated 1515 and printed in 1517–18. The Metropolitan Museum of Art attributes the portal elements to Hans Springinklee or Wolf Traut and the harpy-decorated column base to Albrecht Dürer; Hieronymus Andreae cut the blocks. Woodcut imagery and letterpress text work together as parts of a much larger celebration of imperial lineage.
