Description

Ornaments Atop the Right Portal brings together a winged griffon, a flaming brazier and a lofty crown. Their separate silhouettes reveal the inventive detail behind the monumental architecture of The Arch of Honor.

Albrecht Dürer designed the griffon, Hans Springinklee the brazier, and Albrecht Altdorfer the crown. Made for the great printed celebration of Emperor Maximilian I, the woodcut joins heraldic fantasy with the precise rhythms of Renaissance ornament.
