Description
La Pietà gathers mourning figures around the body of Christ in a tightly bound scene of sorrow. The bowed heads, supporting hands and flowing drapery guide the eye toward the pale body at the center.
Edmond Hédouin translated Eugène Delacroix’s composition into etching, using fine lines and deep shadow to preserve its emotional force. This impression, printed by Delamain, belongs to the 1852 publication Les Peintres vivants and gives the painting’s dramatic contrasts an intimate graphic form.
