Description

Vincent van Gogh’s Portrait of Doctor Gachet, also known as Man with a Pipe, brings a closely framed likeness into etching. Made in 1890, the work is Van Gogh’s only etching. The doctor’s head and shoulders emerge through dense black marks, his pale, bearded face contrasted with the darker surrounding passages. The pipe introduces a small, familiar object into a portrait otherwise concentrated on the sitter’s expression and presence.

Paul-Ferdinand Gachet printed this artist’s proof, making his role part of the impression’s history rather than an additional authorship of the design. Rich inking and selective wiping affect how the etched marks emerge from the plate, allowing tone to participate alongside line. The image therefore preserves both Van Gogh’s drawn conception and choices made during printing. Its directness comes from the compact meeting of sitter, artist and medium, with the portrait held together by the pressure and rhythm of the marks.
