Description
In the Salon des Cent poster, a woman turns away at the left, her orange-toned face and blue-striped cloak sharing the surface with dark-blue lettering. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives the Salon des Cent’s international poster exhibition a particular human image. The combination of figure and written announcement makes the design both a scene to look at and a public introduction to the event.
The 1895 lithograph is printed in seven colors on machine-made wove paper. Its colored graphic surface gives the design a material identity within the exhibition’s broader concern with posters. The work can be considered at another pace than a passing public notice, allowing the relationship between image, lettering and named occasion to remain engaging as a particular composition beyond the event it announces.
