Description
In The Englishman at the Moulin Rouge, a man in a purple suit and hat turns in profile toward women at the left. A yellow area behind helps distinguish the neighboring bodies. The close company gives the visitor a social setting, allowing the image’s interest to develop through the relationship between one figure and the people he faces.
Made in 1892, the lithograph is printed in six colors on laid paper. Toulouse-Lautrec gives the subject a differentiated printed surface, allowing an encounter from nightlife to acquire a lasting visual presence. The work’s interest lies in the meeting of individual character and company, where a recognizable setting gives the visitor a particular circumstance. The Moulin Rouge becomes a place of human relationships as well as performance, making the social scene engaging through its participants.
