Description
In Fastening a Corset, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec places a standing woman toward the right, her yellow corset above a light skirt. A seated man occupies the lower left, introducing a second presence into the dressing scene. Their different levels give the encounter a clear spatial contrast, while the clothing makes the practical act named in the title visually immediate.
Dated 1896, the five-color lithograph belongs to Elles and also bears the subtitle A Passing Conquest. The subtitle introduces a social association without requiring the figures’ full story to be supplied. Toulouse-Lautrec keeps attention on the people and their positions, making an intimate room into a complete pictorial subject. The image balances a private routine with shared company, allowing the relation between seated observer and standing figure to give the scene its quiet tension.
