Description

Christ Among the Doctors by Albrecht Dürer surrounds the young Jesus with six scholars in a tightly framed encounter. Faces and open books fill the image, leaving little space for the dark background. At the center, Christ’s youthful face and carefully articulated fingers contrast with the lined features and emphatic gestures of the older men. The interlocking hands give the discussion a visible rhythm, directing attention to the exchange of ideas rather than to an elaborate setting.

Painted in Venice in 1506, the work represents the childhood episode in which Jesus is found discussing scripture in the Temple. Dürer combines a close grouping associated with Italian painting with the precise observation and expressive contrasts of his Northern training. Youth and age, calm attention and animated argument coexist within the compact arrangement. The result is an intimate religious scene in which faces, books and gestures carry the drama of learning and debate.
