About The Tree of Life, Stoclet Frieze
Gustav Klimt’s The Tree of Life forms part of his design for the mosaic frieze in the dining room of Stoclet House in Brussels. Sweeping, spiral branches spread across a richly patterned composition, bringing together natural forms and ornamental detail. Klimt created full-scale working drawings for the project, which are held by the MAK in Vienna.
Across the design, a standing figure at the left and an embracing pair at the right balance the spreading tree. Its curled branches repeat the spirals and geometric motifs found in the figures’ patterned clothing, while a dark bird interrupts the network of gold-toned forms. The composition moves between recognizable bodies and an ornamental surface, giving the tree both a strong central presence and a rhythm that connects the surrounding figures.
