Description
Edvard Munch’s At the Deathbed confronts loss through a closely gathered group of mourners. The bed extends across the lower foreground, while darkly clothed figures lean toward the person lying beneath the pale covers. Red walls and a deep mass of shadow intensify the room’s enclosed, sorrowful atmosphere.
The 1893 pastel, also known as By the Deathbed (Fever), gives each face and gesture an emotional weight. Clasped hands and lowered eyes convey grief without elaborate narrative detail. Broad contours and concentrated color draw the viewer into the shared experience of waiting, helplessness, and mourning.
