Description

A Pair of Shoes by Vincent van Gogh makes a small, familiar subject feel intensely present. One battered boot stands upright while its companion turns outward to reveal an orange-brown sole studded with hobnails. Loose laces curl across the blue surface below, linking the two shapes and drawing the eye through the foreground.

Van Gogh builds the leather, worn edges and surrounding cloth with restless strokes of color. Warm ochres and rust tones press against deep blues, giving the still life both weight and energy. The shoes suggest use and movement even as they lie still; the painting finds character in their scuffs, creases and uneven forms.

This 1887 work belongs to the Baltimore Museum of Art, where it is titled A Pair of Boots. Its close viewpoint turns an ordinary object into a concentrated study of texture, color and the traces of everyday life.
